About Dr. Cheng

Dr. Lucia Cheng was born in Taiwan and immigrated to the United States at age seven. She grew up in South Pasadena, California and graduated from South Pasadena High School. She completed four years of undergraduate education at University of California at Riverside, majoring in Biology and minoring in Religious Studies. She then went on to complete her medical degree at Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She then returned to California for residency training, and completed her residency in adult psychiatry at Loma Linda University Medical Center in Loma Linda, California. During residency training, Dr. Cheng developed a personal interest in women’s mental health and began her focus on Reproductive Psychiatry.

After completing residency and becoming board-certified, Dr. Cheng worked as teaching faculty at Loma Linda University Medical Center providing specialized women’s mental health services, as well as clinical staff at Loma Linda Veterans Affair Medical Center providing outpatient medication management and neuromodulation treatment. She later moved to Silicon Valley in Northern California, where she worked at Palo Alto Veterans Affair Medical Center as the medical director of the outpatient Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder treatment program and developed extensive experience treating patients via telepsychiatry.

During Dr. Cheng’s clinical experiences in multiple settings, it has become apparent that there is a large population of people in California who are unable to access high-quality psychiatric care due to distance, transportation difficulties, work schedule, childcare responsibilities, or other factors. Thus Phoenix Progressive Psychiatric Services was founded to bridge those difficulties and provide high-quality psychiatric care to those who would otherwise be unable to access it. Currently, Dr. Cheng works part-time at Dominican Hospital Behavioral Health Unit in Santa Cruz, California as an inpatient psychiatrist. This allows Dr. Cheng to devote the necessary time for developing long-lasting therapeutic relationships with her telepsychiatry patients.
